What started as a blog post at the St. Pete Times has been picked up by the Tampa Tribune with multiple articles, some of it starting to investigate USF's knowledge of all of this.According to the Tribune, Moffitt's wife went and spoke to the school about it. This story is denied by the university, but correlated through the account of a witness who saw the discussion take place. To take it a step further, the Tribune followed up with an article after retrieving a total of 9 papers from Shauna's personal computer. The University says there is no cause for investigation and there is no way to prove that Ben didn't take the online classes.
Side note: I don't know about you, but I remember having to show up in person with a student id to take online class tests. This was the same lack of common sense that plagued FSU, and likely plagues a lot of other schools. That seems to be issue #1 that needs to be addressed. Not just at USF, but in general
The liability USF just assumed by denying any investigation -- even a quick glance over/write off -- is amazing. They better be 100% sure these charges are false and that there isn't any other cheating going on that the media will uncover. If so, they now have documented reluctance to even bother with the most basic of investigations from what seems like fairly credible accusations.
We'll see if more and more media outlets start picking up on this story. Right now it seems to be nothing more than a local one.
"Why should the media be reporting this?"
It's a fair and reasonable question. This is, after all, a divorce, and divorces can get pretty messy. Not to mention it's all pretty accusatory even with the evidence, and we have no idea of Ben's side of the story.
Here's the kicker. The school promoted Ben as the shining example of USF athletics on national T.V. broadcasts, in national newspapers (remember the NY Times and ESPN puff pieces?), and in national awards. It was a well marketed, heart warming story.
"Linebacker. Leader. Husband. Father."
The truth, of course, was that Moffitt rode his first marriage all the way to graduation and the NFL only to file for divorce before the big pay day. While national awards were being lobbied for, Moffitt and his wife's relationship had already fallen apart. The school made Ben a public figure and now the people who were sold the story are finding out that it wasn't all that true. Hell hath no fury like media scorned. That and, you know, it's the off-season.
Combine it all with the rampant cheating at another nearby state school, and you have the perfect recipe for a story. Top it off with a sprinkle of university denials like this, and it would seem to have the potential to grow:
Even with this information, Gullette said, "there's really no change at this point" as far as the university is concerned.Ken's absolutely right about the privacy issue, but for the rest of it, USF better hope there isn't much to this and that someone doesn't uncover something else over there. The kind of liability that USF is assuming is the same kind that the NCAA doesn't take lightly to.
"The information we have is information we're getting from reporters," Gullette said. "There's not much to do at this point."
USF President Judy Genshaft would not comment on how the allegations might affect the school's academic credibility, and she referred questions to Gullette.
Ken Cissna, chairperson for USF's Department of Communication, said he couldn't comment on students because of privacy issues. Moffitt is a communication major.
As the Sarasota Herald put it, USF is invoking the "Roger Clemens" defense. The question is which local journalist is going to play the role of George Mitchell?

I won't bother
Man, yesterday was amazing. We were on campus for 12 hours tailgating and I have the sunburn to prove it. After morning mimosas with Screws and company, the parade set the stage. After the parade, there was a basketball game, then I believe a soccer game (that I didn't see), and then the marshall game. To have it all on UCF's campus, all on the north side that didn't even exist 3 years ago, was simply incredible. The administration over in east orlando has done a hell of a job, and the Knights are bowl eligible (6-3). Keep it up.
ECU at Memphis next week. If Memphis can pull off the upset, UCF will be in the drivers seat for C-USA East with a shot at the Liberty Bowl. Not bad for a team that was 4-7 last year. Big win over Southern Miss tonight on the road for the knights. Tulsa last week, USM this week -- its amazing the things that can happen when you don't turn the ball over 5+ times.
Sweet mother pancakes.
The saying goes that if internet message boards were purely representative of a fan base, every team would have a couple of starting quarterbacks and fire their coach three times a year. I think it's fair to apply that logic to what goes on over at
That sister analogy parallels to the routes each football program has taken as well. Leavitt, who of course denies Saban's
All of this adds up to one conclusion -- this game needs to be played, and it needs to be played often.I'm positive that USF will dodge UCF for as long as they can once this contract ends. I'm sure they will kick and scream and piss themselves with anger if UCF ever comes up for BigEast membership. In fact, I think we'll see a completely different BCS structure before USF votes for UCF inclusion. But none of that, absolutely none of it, will affect the behavior of the fans. Fans want this game, communities want this game, players want this game and the local economy wants this game.
When I first saw a thread on UCF rivals instructing people to poke the other teams QB, I paid no mind. This week, with USF QB Matt Grothe, I again passed up the opportunity. But, after reading this quote on
ECU stomped UCF in greenville and won by two touchdowns. It wasn't quite a "rout," which was the headline the Sentinel ran with, but it certainly was convincing. UCF had 5 turnovers in the third quarter. You can't do that on the road against a team that was a popular pre-season pick to win our division (along with USM). It's easy to look at ECU's record and write them off, but with injuries and suspensions, last night was the first real game they've had with close to everyone on the field. My guess is ECU wins out. For our sake, let's hope they lose one more and we find a way to win the rest of our conference games. My expectation for UCF at the beginning of the season was to be bowl eligible. I stand by that. Three more wins knights, four for good measure.
Wowza.
I'm not a big ND fan. Actually, I despise ND. Talking National Championships, when was the last time ND was relevant? Yet every year, sports writers from around the nation talk about how ND is back and whatever other nonsense they can dream up. ND is now 0-4. "Rah! Rah! For Notre Dame," indeed. Someone yesterday told me that Touchdown Jesus has been renamed to Field Goal Jesus. I guess you have take what you can get...
It surprises me how many folks look for reasons to talk down UCF, and it seems to almost always be UF alumni doing it. For years, Orlando has been a gator town. Gainesville is only about an hour out of Orlando, and UF is the big name public university. I'm just not sure if I see the threat, the comparison, or the need for college affiliations of a local region to be so exclusive. It comes across as nothing more than defensive.
I had started the season thinking we could see another Big 10 vs SEC match up in the national championship. Ohio State has lost a little bit of its punch this off-season, and really, that only leaves big blue in the conference. Everyone else sucks (you heard me, Wisconsin.). The SEC, for the record, will be represented by LSU, not Tim Tebow (you heard me, Sentinel staff).
USF handed UCF their second loss of the season on Saturday.
The difference I'm finding between USF fans and UCF fans is a sense of realism and humility. Going 0-17 will do that to ya (keep in mind, when our program was USF's age, we were 9-2 and just as cocky). There isn't a battle for "fourth" going on the state of Florida, like many USF supporters like to claim. There is a battle for "not last" in the state. The competition isn't UF, FSU, UM and UxF. Its FAU, FIU, USF, and UCF. I wouldn't be surprised if UNF decides to join the mix. The talent difference between the big 3 and the rest of us is so large its immeasurable (Yes, Miami fell out of the top 25, but there are some obvious coaching issues going on). UCF fans understand that we're building a program from scratch. USF's quarterback stated after the game that they could beat anyone in the country. I love that kind of confidence, and I wish Moffett had some of it, but please, don't be fooled. The way
I've never claimed UCF was anything than more than what it is (a team one season removed from 0-11) and I don't think any serious fan would. I would just love to meet a USF fan who is willing to admit similar sentiments about their program (10-13 over the past two years. Hardly big time).
At the end of the day, it was a ton of fun on Saturday. On that everyone seems to agree. For those of us who actually feel invested into our community down there in Central Florida (USF qualifies, ironically), it served as a great example of what's possible for both schools. The economic impact alone justifies the game. Both public schools are paid for with tax dollars and the community deserves such a huge economic opportunity. It's truly fantastic to see. After the game, I was 13 miles away in Waterford Lakes and there were USF fans everywhere spending money. I'm sure it was similar last year when UCF traveled to Tampa.
