Leo... Oh, Leo... I'm so disappointed :(
I'm sure we all understand the silliness around intellectual property at this point. I totally understand why Leo left, you gotta protect your own game and all.. But, is Twitter really anywhere near a violation of the trademark TWiT?It's different in the sense that selling apple trees online, or a video game requiring you to eat an apple, or shoot an apple, or use the word apple in a sentence, all have nothing to do with Apple. At least, I think I'm right on this, no?
Anyway, It was this whole "dispute" (if we can call it that) between Ev and Leo that led us to change the terminology on Twitterholic.. I mean.. Why bother upsetting two people whom we deeply respect? Twitterholic is just for fun, so, I mean, whatever, right? Plus, the irony of the whole thing was just so deeply satisfying.
I also feel like our attempt at humor probably didn't help Ev and the gang out any, and for that we're truly sorry. The first instance I could find of Leo complaining about "twit" was a twitter on March 19th complaining about Twitterholic for using the 200+ year old word in a sentence. I know, it seemed crazy to us too, but again.. He's gotta protect his world, I guess... I'd link to the url, but it appears his Twitter page is no longer active. Here was the text though, which someone had sent to me via e-mail:
"Apparently Twitaholic can't count over 2000. Also - we are not TWiTs - we're tweeters. TWiTs is taken, thank you."
Actually, I'm not so sure about that. The definition of "Twit" in this sense, is an act of "Twitting". "Twitting" involves the creation of "Twitters". (American Heritage Dictionary) A twit twitting twitters, or a twit twitted twitters, or I twit some twitters, or... You get the point. It would seem that they are all actual statements. (yeah, I know, I mean... Who knew.).
The word "twit" is also 19th century english slang for someone who does something "rather silly or annoying," (watch Monty Python for reference). This definition seems somewhat fitting in so many ways of course, which is why it was humorous for us to use the word Twit on Twitterholic. Kind of a double meaning thing going on.
Anyway, I'm not a lawyer, don't plan on ever being a lawyer, and really don't care for that type of thing that much as it is, sooo... Maybe I'll get sued by Apple, Leo and Ev for this blog post all at the same time... If I do, I'll make sure to twit it all on twitter.
Wait.. I mean tweet on tweeter, or... something.
