Around the web...

Oi Oi, we're the brews...

Sorry, listening to NoFX for the first time in awhile...

Random stuff from around the web:
  • Is Mahalo Already worth $100m? Jason Calacanis is a pretty persuasive guy with a whole lot of connections. I have a feeling he's going to be pulling in a boat load of VC funding on this one.
  • The Seek One of Gavin's sunday side projects we just launched under Humidity Labs. Nothing to crazy, just a pretty little instant domain search thingy. You may have noticed we linked to QuarterlyCall as well. While not resembling its actual intention, we figured getting a quick mashup out there was better than parking it. Hopefully the domain will "mature" and gain some search engine street cred before we get around to actually pursuing it. We'll see.. Yay sunday side projects.
  • Internships A small guide we put together on Internships over at the Emurse blog. Timely information to help capture some of that summer search craze ;)
  • Google timeline search Pretty cool. I'm not exactly sure what for. But cool.
  • Collection of Jerry Falwell Quotes Just, you know, in case you wanted a refresher.
  • Suspended Disbelief In such a heated playoff series, this is truly a shame. 2 players suspended over something silly.
  • "WWTD? Who Cares?" Lots of folks in a tizzy over Ron Paul's GOP debate comments the other night. While his baseline assertion that our foreign policies over the last 50 years are to blame for 9/11 are echoed in Bin Laden's fatwa, Jonah Goldberg from the National Review has a great piece outlining some of the specific objections with Congressman Paul's statements that many on the right share. Personally, I enjoyed seeing Rudy return to form and lay the smack down ;)
  • Blogsmith.com launches Finally, our cute blogging platform has a home.

Simplicity:
We go to great lengths to make Emurse *appear* simple. It's actually loaded down with features now, and every week gains more of them. It's funny, because we find people don't upgrade their account right away -- it's only after discovering some of the hidden complexities that they feel they need.

We use simplicity in design as a way of bringing in people. With something like resumes, which are naturally intimidating to many people, simplicity is a way of lowering barriers and the perceived need for time commitment. Simplicity doesn't negate the need for features. In fact, its that need for features that makes simplicity so dang tough.

Dress Code:
When I was little, I used to want a job where I had to wear a suit. I'm not sure why, I think it's the sense of status that comes with it. As I've grown older and become more and more entrenched in the technology world, that's not quite the case ;) But that's our industry, suits are totally the norm in say, politics... or.. uhm.. suit sales.

I wonder what would happen if I showed up to a meeting of web developers in a suit. It would certainly work against me. In a different setting though, it would probably be a necessary sign of respect. It shows that you took the time to look your best, and that you're taking the event seriously. It's not about comfort, it's about presentation. Then again, how that presentation has arrived at the suit is beyond me. It's a historic, traditional look of prestige I guess.

Emurse Blog...

We gave the Emurse Blog a face lift a week or two ago. We're now looking to post an "Article" style post once a week, along with some of the testimonials that our users send in. If you have an idea for a post, or would like to be listed as an Emurse testimonial, shoot me an e-mail at alex at emurse.com, or leave it in the comments below. For testimonials, we'll link to your public emurse resume if you have one :)

Emurse Articles:
  • How to Control Your "Google" Results - The premise is that there is going to be information on you out there somewhere. It's up to you to be proactive and take advantage of services on the web. Participate on highly searched, public websites in a positive way and you'll dominate the google result set for your name.
  • Negotiating a New Jobs Salary - A handful of tips to help you position yourself for a higher salary when starting a new job. Simple tactics anyone can try.

Nothing really Portland specific, just.. you know. ;)

  • Atheism, not religion, is the real force behind the mass murders of history - "The indisputable fact is that all the religions of the world put together have in 2,000 years not managed to kill as many people as have been killed in the name of atheism in the past few decades." When you factor in Stalin, Hitler, and all the other brutal attempts at establishing a godless society, it's a pretty strong argument. One has to wonder what the death tolls would be like if the crusaders had nazi war planes though...
  • C.K. Address the Netscape Universe - Jason is a tough act to follow, but I have full faith in C.K.'s ability to take Netscape to yet another level. From my conversations with the team over there, expect some really innovative moves in the somewhat near future. Exciting times continue at AOL.
  • Black Friday Coverage - Deal News black friday shopping coverage. It's that time of year again..

My love is Deep (like a 3-d Movie)...

We're here at the Pop Century Resort, 50's style, for another Orlando CodeJam. Celly, Gavin, Mike and myself holding down the fort the best way we know how. It's just us this time around, which for coding reasons, can be pretty nice. Not that all our AOL friends aren't missed. Just.. yea. It's got an oldschool feel to it.

Lots of programming going on around these parts. I'm no longer trying to guess completion dates on anything, but we're working on some really neat things right now. Can't wait to get it out.

Throw your O's up...

So I'm all packed in. I'll be using Gavin's futon for a bit while I search out apartments. Primarily looking in College Park, Thorton Park, Winter Park, or Downtown (the parks + downtown). So far, it still hasn't really phased me that I moved -- probably because I've been on the go for the last 6 months or so anyway I guess. Thanks for all the people who have offered to help. I still have some phone calls to return, but I'll get there in time.

Moving rant and a couple of links...

Card board boxes are friggin' expensive. I've never bought them new before. I guess I just figured I had such a small place, I wouldn't need many. Wrong. This place is a wreck. I'm drowning in cardboard and bubble wrap as I try to orchestrate a quick like departure (my tenant moves in next friday). I'm rocking out though. I figure leaving D.C. justifies an overdose of Ian McKaye (get the irony? nevermind..). It's a fugazi / minor threat extravaganza over here.
