Around The Web...

Simplicity:
We go to great lengths to make Emurse *appear* simple. It's actually loaded down with features now, and every week gains more of them. It's funny, because we find people don't upgrade their account right away -- it's only after discovering some of the hidden complexities that they feel they need.

We use simplicity in design as a way of bringing in people. With something like resumes, which are naturally intimidating to many people, simplicity is a way of lowering barriers and the perceived need for time commitment. Simplicity doesn't negate the need for features. In fact, its that need for features that makes simplicity so dang tough.

Dress Code:
When I was little, I used to want a job where I had to wear a suit. I'm not sure why, I think it's the sense of status that comes with it. As I've grown older and become more and more entrenched in the technology world, that's not quite the case ;) But that's our industry, suits are totally the norm in say, politics... or.. uhm.. suit sales.

I wonder what would happen if I showed up to a meeting of web developers in a suit. It would certainly work against me. In a different setting though, it would probably be a necessary sign of respect. It shows that you took the time to look your best, and that you're taking the event seriously. It's not about comfort, it's about presentation. Then again, how that presentation has arrived at the suit is beyond me. It's a historic, traditional look of prestige I guess.
